Fit of the week: Lachesis

Welcome back! I hope everyone's holidays were as exceptional as mine. Between visiting my two families and my girlfriend's one I didn't get a lot of time to play eve but some big developments went down in Maut I'll probably post about later today.

I've never been a big fan of split weapon systems, that's why it took me so long to get into Minmatar ships in the first place and also the reason I've never flown a lachesis before yesterday. New war targets brought a new comp and this was the perfect counter for their 100mn tengus and kite ishtars so I hopped in one. I'd trained gallente cruiser V for the proteus a while back and I've always loved recons so why not?

Awesome ship. With my skills and links I could point to almost 90km. Paired with the rapier these two shut down kites. About as tanky as a Moa with 31k ehp and decent resists sans em. I'd drop the invul for an EM hardener if you know you're fighting lasers.

The win:
Ishtar

The fail:
Unfortunately I'd never flown this ship before and we had a link malfunction so for half the fight my point range was only around 47km so we let a tengu go. But, arrogance is a fickle mistress.
Tengu

I think this war will be short lived.

Merry Christmas

61 degrees the week before Christmas, welcome to the northeast. Just checking in to wish everyone the best. I'll be back come January. Merry Christmas!

Fit of the week: Ashimmu

As a nice compliment to the fleet Deimos I posted last week, the ashimmu brings a lot to the table. Nuets, dps, and ninety percent webs. This ship just throws a wrench in any brawling fleets comp.

So firstly I've opted for the long point because this is a support ship for the deimos' and they already have a scram. 54.8k effective with resists ranging from 62 - 75 with kinetic being your resist hole. It pushes a respectable 328dps and can run everything sans the microwarpdrive for two minutes, so cap management will be the big issue with this ship. Know when to pulse or when to focus on only nuets and let the deimos' do the derps.

Try to stay at the edge of your web range. 90% webs help your fleet mates apply their dps much more effectively. The longer you stay on grid you multiply your force while talking the enemy's away with nuets.

I heard a rumor that all web velocity factor bonuses were going to become a thing of the past. Hopefully that's just idle words elsewise the ashimmu and vigilant will become additions to my sold for something better pile.

2013 Burnt

Sorry for the lackluster posting this holiday season. I'm hoping that the new year will bring some new results. I've been pretty burnt out on EVE recently. Good long term friends of mine have taken a hiatus and we've pretty much been spinning or wheels in Placid. I never thought I'd say this, but I kinda miss syndicate.

We thought were moving to maut for more good fights. Since test joined the war zone I've seen fewer and fewer fleets and an increasing number of stabbed cloaky farmers. I know fitting 3 scams solves that problem but why even bother at that point.

I miss Syndicate roams. That's definitely something I've never said before. Yeah it was boring and you'd have to travel for quite a while to find someone to engage, but engage they would. No station games, no blob to win, it was good honest ram ships at each other and see who wins hilarity. I guess that's what leads me to why I'm so burnt.

We've always treated CTQ like a family. If anything was ever needed 95% of the time was free. Missing that mod on your ship? No problem I got you kind of mentality. That's how it's always been, until someone got greedy.

A high level officer in our corp, someone I personally flew with every day decided to steal 27 guardians and join our rival SCUM. Now idgaf about the guardians, isk is replaceable, but family isn't. Our CEO built this guy a computer and we hand delivered it because he was tight on cash and we missed him.

Maybe I'm too loyal to get the backstabbing concept of this game. Now this has created a rift in our corp because people feel they can't trust anyone and people are still flying with the person who left. Maybe it's time to ditch the drama and fly somewhere different. Haha who knows, things are gonna be pretty awesome in 2014.

Bonus Fit of the week: Deimos

I've got a very long ride in the passenger seat at work today, so hooray bonus post. Much like my fellow blogger Ripard over at Jester's trek, I too enjoy my ships green and covered in blasters. Thoraxes and moas were my go to ships when I first got into pvp over in the pertnineere area. This was back in the days when syndicate was fun. Feeling a bit nostalgic for my favorite hull I decided it was time for a fleet deimos.

Hold on, I just need a minute alone with this. I've never flown the diemost before, it had such niche uses before the HAC rebalance that I would always opt for either a thorax or vigilant instead. This ship is monsters now, 57k ehp before slaves with a slamming resist profile. You can get more tank out of it if you opt to change an EANM to an explosive hardener to fill the hole. Also it rocks 770 dps before heat with a dual web, which makes applying it even too small targets a breeze. As if all this wasn't enough, you can run everything including the microwarpdrive for 16 minutes. If you demand your ship to be truly cap stable change a mag stab for a tracking enhancer.

Lovely Lovely ship. Anyone want to buy a vigilant? I have a feeling it'll collect dust after I build this.

Leadership

What makes a good leader? I've noticed that people can point out good leaders when they see one but can't define why they are good. Is it their ability to fc, their ability to run diplomacy, their ability to bring in new blood, their willingness to fight, or is out just some other invisible gleam they put off?

I am a soldier, I've been given leadership roles in the past and realized I don't have the patience to deal with the drama llamas. My solution was always kick their teeth in, because all I know is war. Our corp leader lackofskills (errr lackofguilt) is a great leader in my eyes. He's the reason I still play. Not because he lives about ten minutes from me and could literally put a boot up my but for not logging in, but because he makes the game fun. Corpmates have given him a ton of shit because he is a very aggressive fc. There's a famous quote that's often thrown around ts, "c'mon we can take this." I've been on both ends of this. Sometimes we kill a fleet of dreads, sometimes we watch a vindicator drop to a bunch of scrubs (jking cursed few). He's a content creator and there is always something silly going on when he's around. I've followed him through at least 3 corporations and I'd follow him through the rise and fall of 30 more if it came to it.

I think that's what defines a good leader, someone who despite their failures can muster a few good soldiers to follow them through the mud and still have them smiling.

Fit of the week: Daddy bought something nice

So this month and the past have been slow on the PvP end for me because I've been out earning those iskies. It's very rare that I devote significant time to making money but this is something special, something I've been training for months to fly properly and their are still some holes to fill. So I present, what I've been wasting the past month on!

I've owned a dread in the past (if people count the Phoenix as a dread). Disappointed with its lackluster to do anything properly, I sold it to buy an Archon. It made sense at the time, CTQ was moving and their was talk of deployments. A carrier was the answer to that, but upon settling in maut it collected dust. I use the 4 month rule, if i haven't flown it in that timestamp it's time to sell it or lose it. Since I want top rather too go dropping a carrier solo around low sec selling was the best bet. Enough about me, let's talk nitty gritty of the Moros.

2.1 million effective hit points with the ability to tank 6.3k dps. Pushes a staggering 9.5k dps to 12km with 30 fallof. I'll be replacing some of the mods with pimp as I find it. For now :3 give me a reason to drop it.

Look familiar? It should. Daddy's favorite throwaway frig has some new claws. Tight fit without Genos or a cpu implant.  This is the small gang tackle variant, for solo work I opt to use a td over the web. It's your personal preference as to what you'd like to engage. 154 dps without heat with the ability to tank 158 dps and 6.2k ehp. Lowest resist is explosive with 58%. Grab hold and you'll be hard to pry off.

Flies just like the slasher from my first fit of the week but with significantly more buffer, dps, and resists. With some tinkering you can also get a second asb to fit much like the hawk but that's not really my play style. You should be able to burn most frigs without having to reload your first asb and in fleets versus cruisers you should be able to dictate range to stop or lower incoming damage long enough for dps to grab hold.

The win
Kestrel

The fail
I went into this 1v2 and I popped as Merlin entered hull, should have overheated sooner

I've been super busy with work so I only got to fly it once, if I get time I'll try it out some more.

I flew it yesterday with an AF fleet instead of solo. Here's what we nabbed.

Blog Banter: the shakes.

From Druur Monakh (Twitter: @DruurMonakh) we get the topic of this banter: what was your most nail-biting experience in EVE Online so far? It could be PvP in a 1v1 or 1000v1000, your first fight or your latest one, a scam so close to being uncovered too soon, a trap almost sprung on an unsuspecting victim or the roles reversed and you desperately try to escape.

This question immediately made me think about what got me into PvP and by proxy back into eve. A long time ago I was a carebear. Running the same level four missions over and over AND OVER AND OVER again. Which granted is where I got the initial money to start my PvP venture. Two good real life friends of mine tricked me into getting into PvP. Exodus and Anderson Williams convinced me to join their corp in low sec and rat in null, and I was all for something new. My first day my drake got popped in a belt by a pilgrim. I've never panicked so hard in a video game. My nerves froze adrenaline rushed and I did nothing as he grabbed scram. Money wasn't the issue, I had just sold my Golem and my drake was hardly pimp, I don't think I even knew what deadspace mods even were at this point.
It was the speed. Every PvE aspect of this game for me was at a spoonfed pace, but this guy. This guy roared on grid and grabbed a point and I had no idea what type do besides shake. I don't think I even locked him until after I was capped out lol.
I can't find the mail right now,but whoever you are thank you for murdering me. It made me strive to learn PvP. Come and get some.

Edit: I don't know why this one is highlighted in white. o.O halp!

Hot Dropping

So this month we've been on the pos and poco warpath. Our coalition, which still needs a name guys, has been knocking every wothwhile pos in our immediate vicinity. Sometimes with little to no resistance other times like throwing a hornets nest through a woodchipper. We are not the largest or toughest entity around but we ARE making a name for us. We didn't want your blues anyway seems to be our new motto, and a name we have made. Sometimes you do have to look at what you're about to poke and realize that you might need a hand.

People look down on batphoners but they are a necessary part of fight escalation. This was the case with our most recent pos knock. It was a less than ten man corp who owned this drug lab sitting on a pretty worthless moon. We expected little resistance but came prepared for a hotdrop anyways. When the pos hit about half structure we noticed a ninja unicorns cyno alt followed by ten of his friends into local. Now ten on 50 is bad odds for them which screamed escalation, and boy was that the understatement of the year.

Battle report

The battle report does not tell the whole story. Shogun Mayday is a member of Casoff but his alt is also in ninja unicorns. He dropped against us so we put him down. Once ninja dreads hit field we lit the cyno and the rest is very expensive tears.

Thanks black legion!

Fit of the week: Omen

The fit of the week comes from a corpie of mine again, actually, from the same one who brought you the original slasher fit. I've jokingly nicknamed it the ghetto ONI.

This fit is a machine. Its pushes over 2300 m/s before snakes or links and can easily pull over 4k with them, while still applying 250 dps at 20km + 4 falloff. Set distance at 17km and kite all day. Stay away from fast frigates or ones that you land on top of, your warriors can only do so much. You can still manage to wreck slower tankier frigs like the hawk, but range is your friend and you have no defensive nuet.

I need to build some brawlers. I've noticed I've been flying a lot of kitey ships. If you have any suggestions you like top see post them below.

The Win
Hawk
Naga

The Fail
Scrammed

Fit of the week: Hookbill

When I first started playing eve I had this terrible habit of not flying ugly ships.  This is one of the ugliest. Like Toucan Sam's ugly brother.  I've recently gotten very sick of old man gang and their tendency to fly kite wolves, condors, and raildevils. This is a counter to these ships

Rocket Launcher II

This is built for faction warfare plex defense. A "we must defend this house" kinda fit. Upon entering a site drop a can with 1 ammo our whatever trash you are carrying as a frame of reference. Kill the rat then orbit your can. Should anything enter your site they must brawl you. Rockets plus dual web and an afterburner make you a brawling machine with range control boot.

The Win
Jaguar and Atrons gank I stopped. The guy from junk warped out in structure.
Nuet Slasher. Held up well even with Nuet pressure.

The Fail
Stay away from destroyers

Maut Invasion

I mentioned back in my previous SFI post that maut had been invaded. A group of aussies known as capital punishment killed a revelation of ours during off hours and set up a large pos while also rfing a number of pocos in our system. Not one to back down from a fight or take insults like these sitting back our alliance leader, lackofguilt, called for an immediate form up which led to a 7am coming out off reinforced pos.

I have to applaud my boys and blues for setting alarms and being there. The pos bashing was pretty uneventful. Capital punishment brought about 15 Megas while we were waiting to form up then they slowly trickled offline. The only note worthy fight of the day was an assault frigate ambush hoping to grab some of our tier 3s and har losing 4 ships. Sorry Har they really just didn't like you.

I spent most of the day in my Oracle but when it came to the bashing I got to fly a ship I haven't since it was retooled to a drone boat. This cruise missiles geddon isn't my fit but boy do I enjoy it. I even got to destroy a fleet of rr mryms (that mail is a bit jacked up) with it a few days later. Thanks for the fit Jester! I haven't decided the fit of the week yet. Leave me some suggestions in the comments section here or evemail ZIF W.

Sometimes Orcas Fail

So this whole venture stated with me running late to a null roam and hopping in an interceptor to catch up with the rest of my fleet.  25 jumps through goons space later we chased some miners but they all warped away before we could find them on grid so we decided that most of us were ready to take a break and grab some dinner.  When a corpie of mine came up with the brilliant idea of trying a log-off-ski. Always one to try silly shit, I was game for this. Besides I needed to plex a bit on my faction warfare alt anyways. So, after an hour of eating and bullshitting we decided to see if we could spring a trap.  We all logged in and I hit d-scan to find a mackinaw and an Orca in the belt I logged off in.  The mackinaw imeadiately warped when i hit grid but the orca delayed.

Voila

Unluckily enough I had landed 118km from him and burnt out my mwd closing the gap. Luckily I closed enough of the gap to still catch him. ^.^  This made my day because I almost never fly interceptors and who doesn't wanna shoot some goons.

Fit of the week: Gate camp Talos

I've been super busy with boring pos bashes this week. Snore. Here's an oldy but a goody. The Talos is a pretty versatile ship, it's tracking bonus makes it stand out over the other tier 3s to me. So this week I'll show the two different setups I use.

Very fun ship at just under 1000 scan res. This ship can volley most frigs. Stick at zero to the gate. If frigates try to burn back to gate they will have zero traversal, and if they burn away they'll be far enough and slow enough track. Align to some celestial and stop engines because this ship won't last more than 3-4 volleys of Gate guns . If you have a dedicated point ship swap your long point for an LSE II.

For those of you wanting less of a "koombayah" fit.  Drop all the sensor boosters for two meta four shield extenders and a 10mn mwd. It becomes a monster kiting ship. Just watch out for blobs of frigs.

The Fail:

Fit of the week: SFI

This week I've been slacking. I've been using that RLML Caracal a bit too much so this fit of the week is a classic go to ship of mine.

Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

This is my go to "rally the troops" ship. If we form up to fight and little to no Intel is given nine times out of ten you'll see this. This ship is a Jack of all trades. Other ships fill the niche roles it performs better but you can choose to kite, brawl, or act heavy tackle. You can also easily drop a LSE for a large ASB if you know you won't have logi. If you know you'll be engaging frigs you can drop the 425s to 220s or 180s for the increased tracking. This is a very fun and very fast ship.

I wrote this one on my phone, so when I get home I'll add the win and fail portion of this fit of the week.

PS As of yesterday after I logged we were invaded in maut. So expect a fun fit of the week with some epic win or fail next week.

The Win
Thrasher
Scythe Fleet Issue
Garbage
Tengu

The Fail
Moon Warriors like to drop battleships on a cruiser fleet
Perma Jammed :(

Doesn't really count because it's a normal  stabber and we did kill him but it is essentially the same fit

Sometimes win happens

I will never understand the stupidity of some pilots. For instance this over-aggressive carrier pilot.  Now fitting aside, this pilot made some stupid mistakes.

1) inexperienced capital pilots do not belong in low sec
2) he lit a cyno with a ship he did not want to lose.
3) he aggressed on station against the same group twice in one day to no avail.

So I'll quickly run through how this came to fruition. Early in the afternoon I noticed a cyno pop in maut (yes I still kill cyno ships, I never buy ozone because of this) I landed on grid to a rupture. A quick look at the ship I noticed he had guns equipped. Juicier killmail. So I reshipped into something a bit more bling for the luls. Undocking in my vigilant I aggressed and warped to a close celestial to drop the gate guns. Upon returning I was greeted by a thanatos repping his cyno sitting just off the undock. I tried rallying some corpmates to bump off and neut but no one was active. Rats blueballed again.

This is where things get stupid. He hung around and baited with his cyno rupture some more, giving us time to mobilize. Even with numbers now we realized most of our cap pilots were offline, so it was time to call in a bat phone. The rest is tears. Thanks for the mail

Fit of the week: Rapid Light Caracal

Before today I've never flown anything with rapid light missiles.  Even though I started as a very heavily Caldari Sp based character I had always used rockets.  I knew how well these were as anti-frigate platform but I never expected people to engage it and with the low scan res and not-quite-fast enough speed to catch most frigates I figured I'd be flying around watching frigates warp away.  Booorrriiinngg! Now this is the fit I'm rocking because I still only have light missiles to III so obviously rock the tech II's if you can.

Warrior II x 2

So I don't think I really need to explain this fit.  Kite targets at Point range and use the web defensively.  If frigs try to burn out of range overheat the mwd and point to keep them on grid for as long as possible.

The Win:
All of these were withing twenty minutes of actually building the ship which may have biased me a bit but here we go.

1. Fed Navy Comet + incursus + breacher. (Breacher got away)
2. Stabber Fleet Issue hero bump
3. Fed Navy #2

The Fail
Haven't lost it yet so no loss mails to show off.  I will say that you should avoid cruisers that can project their range because they will out dps you. Stick to frigs and destroyers and let them think youre buffer fit and you'll see some success.

A corpie of mine had used this fit to great success. It has a hefty tank, reps well, and pushes moderate dps. The trick behind it is in the finesse. It's all about getting people to engage you thinking you are a logi sans fleet. So when I was "autopiloting" through low and landed 15km off a Gate to see a stabber I got a wee bit excited.  Alas, I know better than to get my hopes up in low sec. A quick check of pilot info shows he's apart of Gladius Veritatis who happen to love not fighting alone. *cough cough fcon titans*  so I approached gate and he aggressed and  I decided to jump through to confirm he was not alone.  Another stabber sat on this side, now I had the choice to engage immediately while stabber #1 waits out his aggression timer or burn off the gate in case the cavalry comes in. In this case I did a bit of both. Dammit for being indecisive. Today I learned that the exequror could have handled either of these ships solo, my reps held fine while fighting them 1 on 1, but the combined dps of them was too much for my tank. As I put the first stabber into structure I went pop.  Almost a brilliant idea. Back to the drawing board hopefully I can update this with some win later.

Also don't worry this isn't the fit of the week.  This is a silly bonus post. Fit set for Friday should be fun ^.^

Fit of the week: Slasher

BOOO! A cheap ass T1 frigate for the first fit of the week. Honestly this ship is one of the ships I enjoy flying the most. I can fly an Archon and a Talos and pretty much everything BS sized and down with the exception of some specialty stuff but this frigate is my favorites and I'll explain why. Three words: Faction warfare plexers.  The bane of my existence.  Since our move to Maut from NPC null I assumed popular local meant more goodfights. Boy was I wrong.  Most of the space around us is populated by condors or stabbed incursus' (incursi?).  So a corpmate of mine made a fit and I tinkered with it a bit and BEHOLD (drumroll please) the Condor Hunter

Slasher
125mm Gatling Autocannon II
125mm Gatling Autocannon II  Republic Fleet EMP
125mm Gatling Autocannon II
 Small Nosferatu II

J5B Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Medium Ancillary Shield Booster Navy Cap Booster 50
Limited 1mn Microwarpdrive I
Stasis Webifier II

F85 Peripheral Damage System I
Nanofiber Internal Structure II

Small Projectile Collision Accelerator I
Small Projectile Metasis Adjuster I
Small Projectile Metasis Adjuster I

So this ship appears to be paper but using your speed as your life it can more than out tank the condors light missiles as you close range.  Your asb will keep you alive while you close the gap, web + scram + nos = a very bad day for any condor pilot. The tracking rigs mean that you can keep a very tight orbit and still hit for maximum damage and your nos can also help you disengage if a fight goes poorly. If you find this fit to be too paper or if you run into a lot of navy slicers swap one for an Anti-Em shield rig.   If you find yourself fighting more incursus than condors swap the web for a tracking disruptor.

The Win:
#1 Buffer
#2 ASB
#3 AAR Incursus

The Fail
#1 Hookbill
#2 Coercer
#3 Algos--  this one was just a total fail on my part.

So as you can tell this ships weakness is alpha damage.  Neut pressure can be handled because not much on this ship drains a lot of cap.  Use your nos to keep scram active and by all means overheat overheat overheat.  This bugger is for those who like their fights fast and balls deep ^.^

Overall Zif Rating 8.5/10

Howdy!

I'm terrible with introductions, as you can tell by my awful title. Howdy? who uses that word that didn't grow up in the 50s? I'm a 24 year old eve bittervet who has played on and off for about 6 yearsMy ingame name is Zifw and I'm apart of Chaotic Tranquility in Casoff alliance.  We recently moved to Maut which opens up easy access to null and low-sec pvp and despite the constant action I'm still bored so Hooray... Blog. Who cares? Right-o exactly no one, but to continue onward this blog will feature a fit of the week.  Whatever the hell I feel like building and dicking about with. By the end of the week I'll post the mails good or bad and rate the effectiveness.  I'll open up suggestions later but as of right now I'm brand new to the whole blogging environment. So stick around and enjoy the fail.
